History of ancient Tamil varma and acupressure therapy...
Varma vaidhya, marma vaidhya or Vrama sigichai,Marma chikistha and varmakkalai was created in south India present day Tamilnadu which is more than 5000yrs old and are also known as the mother of all martial arts like kung-fu,Jijutsu,Chi kung.In ancient days Varma or marma vaidhya used only to treat kings,Generals and injured soldiers, its called "Raaja Vaidhya".
Bodhidharma a south Indian Tamil pallava king's third prince (original name is Jayavarman before embracing Buddhisum) who renounced his worldly pleasures and embraced buddhisum, who is also well educated in the field of medicine, mastered the martial art varmakkalai ,Kuththuvarisai and embarked in a journey to rejuvenate mahayana buddhisum all over the world and settled down finally in southern part of China's Shaolin temple approx in 5th or 6th century, where he taught the monks about varma vaidhya so that they can strengthen their bodies and defend themselves against the dacoits and frequent invasions, which is later know as the Eighteen Arhat hands or Sinew metamorphosis classic which are known as the pillars of shaolin kung-fu or chi-kung by chinese.
Till today they have lot of respect for Bodhidharma who is known as Damo in chinese whom they consider as their first teacher of shaolin
kung-fu and 28th patrich of shaolin temple.
As per our ancient Tamil literatures and scriptures which are more than 5000yrs old, mentioned varma kalai to the god Shiva who is said to have taught it to his son Lord Muruga.Tamilians consider Lord Muruga as their ancestor, While disguised as an old man, Lord Murugan passed the knowledge of varmam to the sage Agastyar who is considered as an aadi siddhar, the first siddhar among 18 great siddhars who lived in this world, who then recorded it and taught the skills among his students. Siddha medicine is also attributed to our great sage Agastyar. There are two types are methods of varmas practised by our ancestors, one is called varma vidhya and the other one is called marma vidhya,Varma vidhya is considered much older than Marma vidhya, the difference is the later one Marma vidhya is concised and practised by north Indian sages or Rishis who practice Ayurveda, who learnt this art from Tamil siddhars,so Varma vidhya is practised by siddhars from south India. So the advanced martial art form used for defence is called Varmakkalai and Marmakkalai which is also known as kalarippayittu in Kerala,India. The sages and Rishis consider this art as very dangerours and sacred,so they taught this art only to a true, humble dedicated desciple and not even to their own childrens. The Sushruta Samhita (c. 4th century) identifies 107 vital points (Marmas) on the human body of which 64 were classified as being lethal if properly struck with a fist or stick death is imminent.Sushruta's work formed the basis of the medical discipline ayurveda which was taught alongside various martial arts. With numerous other scattered references to marma and Varma in Vedic and epic sources, it is certain that South Asia's early fighters knew and practised attacking and defending vital points.
Knowledge of the body's vital points in India was not just confined to humans but also elephants. Known as nila, learning these points on an elephant's body was and remains necessary for mahouts. Prodding particular nila with a stick elicits various responses such as bringing the animal under control or making them kneel. Warriors would learn to attack certain nila on opposing war-elephants during battle, which could either kill or frighten the animals.
We should give most of the credit for preserving and developing the sacred art to Chinese Shaolin monks and Chinese people, who embraced it in to their culture, developed it and spread it world wide which our ancestors failed to do and is now famously known as Chinese Acupuncture or Acupressure.People from all over the world learned it mostly from Chinese and developed it in to various other therapies know as Shihatsu by Japanese, Sujok therapy by koreans, by western people as Hand Reflexology,Foot Reflexology and Auricular therapy but all these therapies are still rooted with the ancient arts like Chinese Acupuncture and Tamil siddha Varma/Marma vaidhya.Surprisingly the varma vidhya or varmakkalai is also practiced till today by certain communities deep in Tamilnadu,India and its practised in the same way no change and also the scriptures about varma are only in Tamil in a literary form which the masters from various places, religions who learned it did not try to translate it,they learned it in Tamil till today.
Only for the last two decades people and goverments in India started realising about their lost sacred art,now there are many researhes going on based on the ancient scriptures.Central government planning to introduce yoga as a subject for students and our prime minister Mr.Narendra modi has announced June 21 as yoga day in UN assembly which was accepted world wide and practised by millions of people on that day this year 2015 and in south India Tamilnadu government has opened some researh institutes, medical colleges specially for Ayurveda ,siddha,Yoga and varma.
